Local pupil’s ‘Ben10’ character wins SA competition

2014-09-30 00:00

A LOCAL pupil has come third out of over a million participants in a competition to draw a new Ben10 character for the television series.

“Skull Crusher” is the name of the new creature he created.

Allandale Primary School pupil Luqmann Haffejee (10) entered a national Cartoon Network animation generation competition.

The competition was sponsored by HDI Youth Marketers and Pick n Pay School Club Cartoon Network Company.

More than a million pupils from all over the country took part.

HDI regional manager Chantél Gregerson said Luqmann competed against nine provinces for the Ben10 drawing competition and he was placed third in the nine to 11 age group. “He had to draw a brand new alien species for the new Ben10 series,” she said.

She said that Luqmann has emphasised that his new character “Skull Crusher” will “beat up” the evil opponents in the series.

Luqmann told The Witness that he looks forward to seeing his own drawing on television. He said he loves watching Ben10, and he loves how the characters transform during the programme.

His parents, Suleman and Fathima Haffejee, were very excited to see their talented boy honoured for his animation drawing.

“It’s his favourite cartoon programme and that’s what inspired him to give it his all when drawing the Ben10 character,” said Fathima Haffejee.

Luqmann walked away with awesome prizes such as an iPod, Cartoon Network goodie bag, framed certificate and artwork, and a R3 000 cheque for his school.

Allandale Primary School acting principal Ayesha Cassimjee, a fine arts graduate, felt that Luqmann is a natural, and his talent is pure.

“This achievement will boost his confidence as a young artist. Art is very good at developing the creative side of a personality. The school promotes arts as a way to improve academics,” she said.

Gregerson thanked the school co-ordinator, Rehana Randeree, for allowing them to run the competition.

“We have big competitions scheduled for next year,” she concluded.
