Local riders excel in national schools eventing championships

KWAZULU-NATAL excelled in the recent South African National Equestrian Schools Association (Sanesa) national schools eventing championships at the Dolcoed Equestrian Centre in Lidgetton in the Midlands.

The province’s teams finished first in four of the seven classes. A strong team from Gauteng won the 90 cm competition for high schools, with Mikaela Nicolau and Philippa Mcbride edging Jamie-Lee McGregor and Guy Houston into third and fourth places respectively.

It was a different story at primary school level where KZN swept the board with wins in the 60, 70 and 80 cm classes. The 60 cm team of Sumaiya Varachia, Nastasha Morphis and Elinor Capostagno gave the other provinces a lesson in wet weather riding, hogging the top three places, while Rachel Guthrie and Becky Erskine won the 70 cm and 80 cm respectively, registering a double for Clifton Prep in Nottingham Road.

The long spell of inclement weather led to underfoot conditions that tested the abilities of riders to the full, particularly in Saturday’s cross country section where there could well have been a number of fallers, but thankfully no one dismounted at a jump. The courage and tenacity of riders and horses were commented upon by tournament director Gill Arathoon.

Six provinces were represented in all — KZN, Gauteng, Limpopo, Eastern Cape, Mpumalanga and North West — with the longest journeys being from Hoedspruit in Limpopo, and Port Elizabeth.

On Saturday night, the teams gathered for a talk by South Africa’s top resident eventer, Paul Hart, who also handed out certificates and colours to the riders. Under Sanesa rules, competitors at 60 and 70 cm earn provincial half-colours, while full colours go to those tackling the 80 and 90 centimetre classes.
