Local singer ‘a nerd and cool kid rolled into one’

2011-01-24 00:00

SUZANNE Jade is an adult contemporary singer and songwriter based in Ramsgate on the South Coast. She grew up on the coast and after graduating with several distinctions from the Institute of Marketing Management decided to focus full time on her music career. Suzanne (24) has been performing professionally since she was 14 and has already been playlisted on radio stations around the country, including East Coast Radio, RSG, Radio Pretoria, IFM and Kingfisher FM.

What is it about your job that you enjoy most?

There are so many wonderful things about being a singer and songwriter. Watching people smile, close their eyes and listen or even just sing along when I perform is amazing. I often get e-mails or phone calls from people to say that my songs have touched their hearts in a very special way, sometimes even moved them to tears. I can’t describe how honoured I feel when people share things like that with me.

Do you get nervous before going on stage?

Oh yes, every time! That’s what makes it exciting, though. If I ever stopped getting nervous then I think it would be time to throw in the towel.

When did you first know that you wanted to be a singer?

My mom used to sing and play guitar for my sister and me as little girls. As a surprise for my mom, my dad taught me to sing the harmony of Dream, Dream, Dream by the Everly Brothers when I was about six, while he sang the melody and played guitar. I’ve been hooked ever since.

What is your favourite thing about living on the south coast?

Definitely the ocean. I enjoy going for walks along Ramsgate or Port Edward beach at sunset.

Who does the best breakfast on the south coast?

Waffle House, Waffle House, Waffle House! Yummy!

What change would you most like to see in South Africa?

The short version of my answer is that I would like to see the anger and fear replaced with compassion, consideration and camaraderie.

What do you do to keep healthy?

I try to cycle at least three times a week and drink as much water as I can. Luckily I don’t have a sweet tooth and love veggies.

Which song best describes you?

Don’t know if I could pick just one song. I can narrow it down to something between I Will Survive by Gloria Gaynor, Mama Told Me Not to Come by Three Dog Night and Respect by Aretha Franklin.

At school were you the cool kid, the nerd or the one that nobody even noticed?

I was home-schooled from grade five onwards and ended up matriculating at 14. I guess that made me a nerd and cool kid all rolled into one.

Who is the person you would most like to meet?

Dianne Warren. She writes the most beautiful ballads and is such an inspiration to me.

Where do you see yourself in five years’ time?

At the Grammys of course!
