THREE local men are in the South African canoe polo team for the World Championships in Milan, Italy, in September.

One is Matt Swemmer, Butcher Boys’ restaurant manager, who told The Witnesss: “It is all systems go now as we have all completed our preparations for the big event.”

Swemmer has been participating in the sport for the past eight years.

He said this year’s world championship will be his third and he is looking forward to competing again at the international level.

“This coming weekend we will be competing in Bologna, Italy, and that will be our final preparations before the big event on 1 September,” said Swemmer.

The South Africans will compete against some of the more developed countries — Sweden, Russia, Ireland, France and Germany.

The other participants from the City of Choice representing South Africa are Dean Oellermann, Dale Morphew. They wikll be accompanied by coach and manager Kevin Meier.

This event has been previously held in England, Germany, Japan, Brazil and Holland.

WIKIPEDIA describes canoe polo (called kayak polo in some countries) as a competitive ball sport played on water in a defined “field” between two teams of five players, each in a kayak.

The object of the game is to get the ball into the opponent’s goal.

The team scoring the most goals in a set time is the winner.
