Local under-20 rugby teams merge

2008-03-21 00:00

IN what is a ground-breaking decision, the player resources at U20 level in midlands club rugby are to be combined.

After protracted debate at a number of levels within the Midlands Rugby Sub Union and the KZN Rugby Union, chairmen Zak Binikos (Maritzburg Varsity) and Tony Day (PMB Collegians) have agreed to pool player resources at U20 level.

This means that Collegians and Varsity will field composite U20 A and B teams for the 2008 KZN club rugby season under the Midlands banner.

The teams, to be known as Midlands U20 A and Midlands U20 B, will play in the Frank Norris U20 A Division and U20 B Division respectively. A third U20 team will play in the U20 C Division as PMB Collegians.

The two Midlands U20 teams will be coached by the Midlands Rugby Academy’s Steve Botha and Ralph Cawood, and will be based at Woodburn Stadium.

The Midlands U20 A and U20 B teams will follow the PMB Varsity first and second teams, who will be playing in the Premier (Moor Cup) and Premier Reserves divisions.

The home matches for the Midlands U20 teams will alternate between Woodburn Stadium and the Peter Booysen Sports Park grounds on the campus off Golf Road. The teams will be managed by a committee made up of officials from the relevant parties.

All interested U20 players are invited to participate in the final trials, which will held at 5.45 pm on Tuesday at Woodburn.

For more information, Botha can be contacted at 082 443 7420 and Cawood at 082 646 8037.
