Locals join prayers and recall Madiba’s links to PMB

WOODLANDS community members gathered last night to pray for former president Nelson Mandela.

The heavy rain did not deter about 50 people, who with local ministers, lit candles for Mandela before the prayer service.

Bruce Williams said he was there because he wanted to be part of the people praying for Mandela.

“My prayer is that he must be at peace when his day comes. We must all release him. He changed the world for us. It’s everyone’s responsibility to make the world better,” said Williams.

Msunduzi Municipality speaker Babu Baijoo recalled the city’s links with Mandela.

“We have a heritage site in this city and we need to be proud of the legacy of Mandela here.”

Councillor Inderjit Manilal read the speech Mandela gave when he was inaugurated as president in 1994.

Msunduzi Deputy Mayor Mervin Dirks asked what had gone wrong with the leadership of today, adding: “We need to unite for the icon’s dreams of fighting social ills”.
