Locals ready for next ASP event

The Billabong Challenge, a five-day mobile event that had top junior surfers scouring the Natal coast, surfing cooking waves and then watching the footage afterwards and awarding prizes on the basis of the footage, has come to a close. This unique contest, with all of the footage, can be viewed on the Zigzag Magazine website www.zigzag.co.za.

There are some really amazing video clips, including Durban surfer Chad Du Toit executing a perfect Kerrupt Flip — a full rotation 360 with a grab — arguably one of the most difficult moves to pull off in surfing. Check out the video clip; it is insane.

Up in Durban town, amongst the Blue Flag controversy and stinking, faeces-polluted beaches, there is another event on the way, the Lizzard Nando’s Surf Pro.

The main event is a one star ASP Africa WQS men’s contest and there is a Grade 1 Pro Junior International, as well as a women’s 2A Pro Division, with a total of R121 500 in the prize pool.

The two wildcards for the event are Shawn Dennis (Durban) and Mark Shepperson (Umdloti). Davey Weare, a two-time champion who has been on a roll lately, will also be competing.

Over at Teahupoo, it is contest time and the top 45 surfers are waiting for the world’s most feared and dangerous wave to come to life. People have been killed surfing at Teahupoo, and everyone fears for their lives out there. Travis Logis of Durban surfed fearlessly there in 2006, showing everyone that growing up surfing right hand beaches doesn’t mean that you have any disadvantage when it comes to surfing massive left handers.
