Lodge worker ‘steals millions, kidnaps boss’

CAPE TOWN — A dramatic scene played itself out in Mbombela over the weekend when a young employee from Londolozi Private Game Reserve was caught trying to make off with millions stolen from the lodge, as well as a Land Rover Discovery 4.

Mpumalanga SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Gerald Sedibe told Traveller24 that Wade Morgan Williams (30), who worked in the financial department at the lodge, threatened the lodge’s general manager at gunpoint on Saturday evening, forcing him to disclose the company’s online banking PIN number.

Once he had obtained the information, Williams tied the GM up, kidnapped him in the company’s Land Rover Discovery 4 and dumped him in the bushes close to the lodge.

Sedibe said that Williams transferred millions of rands into his own bank account, and stole more than R100 000 in cash.

The GM was discovered in the bush by rangers early on Sunday morning and the incident reported to the police. Williams was tracked down and arrested in Mbombela shortly after.

He was charged with two counts of armed robbery, kidnapping, as well as being in the possession of a stolen vehicle, a stolen firearm and ammunition.

A Londolozi staff member confirmed the incident.

Williams has since appeared in court on Tuesday and was remanded in custody. The case has been postponed till April 14.
