London borough on trade safari

2008-03-06 00:00

The Pietermaritzburg Chamber of Business (PCB) yesterday hosted a trade delegation from Croydon, the largest borough in London.

Croydon Business, the borough’s strategic business support agency, is on a week-long trade visit to Johannesburg, Durban and Pietermaritzburg. The agency has been at the centre of turning Croydon into the most enterprising borough in London.

PCB CEO Andrew Layman said Croydon Business is a public-private partnership between the local council and the business community, and the council funds it. Layman believes the concept offers valuable lessons for Pietermaritzburg in that it allows the business community to operate independently.

Representatives of Croydon Business said they were keen to explore two-way trade with local businesses as opposed to simply selling products from the United Kingdom.

Meetings were held yesterday with local stakeholders. Guests included business people from Croydon and Pietermaritzburg and officials from the Msunduzi Municipality. The types of businesses represented in the trade delegation range from tea, flooring, beauty producst, mass housing and renewable energy.
