Louis chills his way to the top

ANY golfer will tell you that the key to success is practice, but that is not the case for yesterday’s Volvo Golf Champions winner Louis Oosthuizen.

The 31-year-old South African enjoyed the festive season camping with his family in the Namib desert instead of on the driving range, and that may well have been the trick for him this weekend.

“Maybe no golf and a proper rest is the key,” joked Oosthuizen after edging out fellow South African Branden Grace by a single shot at Durban Country Club. “I really didn’t think about golf. We were travelling and just camping wherever we stopped driving. It was fantastic.”

Oosthuizen had a difficult 2012 that saw him battle a lower back injury that had seen him withdraw from the Open Championship.

While his injury is still problematic, it is a process of managing it now. As a result, he doesn’t practice as often as he used to, and he reserves his big, booming drives for only the most necessary situations.

“My physio has been fantastic this week,” said the champ, affectionately known as “King Louis” by South African golf lovers. “I like that the course is short. It allows me to use my irons and not worry about playing too big and hurting my back. It [his back] wasn’t an issue for me at all today.”

Oosthuizen’s victory means that he pockets a cool $700 000 for his troubles. Not bad for your first four days of work after a relaxing holiday.

He leaves for the United States in three weeks time, where he begins his PGA season at the Northern Trust Open in California.
