Louisiana: no bail for child rape suspect

2012-08-07 00:00

A 29-YEAR-OLD man who was arrested for the rape of a six-year-old girl appeared briefly before a Port Shepstone magistrate yesterday morning.

Magistrate Karen Scheepers denied him bail, explaining that in terms of the Bail Act he would not be eligible.

“You will automatically go back into custody,” she said.

While standing in the dock, dressed in a grey tracksuit top, he signed a request for legal aid.

According to the charge sheet, the man allegedly inserted his finger into the young girl’s vagina.

The incident allegedly happened on Friday at Louisiana, a collection of newly built RDP houses and informal establishments inland of Port Shepstone, close to the Umtentweni ramp tollgate on the N2.

Police arrested him the same day.

Police said the six-year-old had initially kept quiet about the incident, which had allegedly happened when she went to a spaza shop.

But she broke down and told her mother at bath time.

Scheepers postponed the case to August 13.
