Love Triangle: Woman doused and burnt

2009-08-06 00:00

A WOMAN was doused in methylated spirits and set alight in Northdale in what police believe was a love triangle.

The victim, Sli Bhengu, is a street vendor in Manchester Road. A woman approached her on Tuesday afternoon as she tended her stall. Police said the women had an argument and then Bhengu was doused with “a flammable substance’’ and set alight.

Police, summoned at about 2 pm, found Bhengu lying on a bank next to a stream where she had plunged into the water to douse the flames. “She had sustained severe burn wounds to her face, chest and hands and was immediately removed by ambulance to a hospital in the city,” said Senior Superintendent Henry Budhram.

Police arrested a 22-year-old suspect. She is to appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court on charges of attempted murder.
