Love no easier in old age

2013-11-02 00:00

LOVE, it seems, does not get any easier as you get older.

Take the case of a 62-year-old Bluff pensioner who was charged with attempted rape recently by his 70-year-old Glenwood lover after the two allegedly had a fight.

The pensioner, who appeared briefly in the Durban Magistrate’s Court this week, remained behind bars for six days before he was finally granted R1 000 bail.

Neither party can be named as it is legally prohibited in sexual offence cases.

According to details in a statement made by the pensioner in court, the argument between the lovebirds stems from the lover’s alleged use of an online dating agency where she allegedly entertained the affection of other gentlemen.

The pensioner began dating his lady love three years ago after his wife, who was suffering from terminal cancer, insisted he move on and find another partner.

He then fell head-over-heels in love with his girlfriend and the couple were inseparable, spending time at casinos and bed and breakfasts.

Then the sick wife recovered and returned home three months ago from the couple’s daughter’s home in Polokwane, but allowed her husband to continue with his relationship.

During this time, the retired man purchased a computer for his sweetheart. Shortly thereafter, he found out about her alleged activities and then confronted her at the Bartel Road Old Age home where she lives.

Admitting to a heated argument in his statement, the pensioner said he slapped her twice and then left.

Later that day, police arrived at his home to arrest him.

At the police station, he was denied an after-hours bail application, as his lover had by then also obtained an interim protection order against him.

The heartbroken pensioner, who spent last weekend in prison, is forgiving, however, and said he still loved his sweetheart.

He said in his statement that he would defend himself on the basis that he could not have attempted to rape her as he needed medical intervention before he could indulge intimately with her.

Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane confirmed the 62-year-old man’s arrest.
