THE first day of the Independent Schools’ Festival, which is being hosted by Kearsney, on Wednesday saw generally low scores as the bowlers had the better of the day. All matches were captain’s declaration games with only one ending in a draw.

Hilton’s Tom Curran had the best figures of 6-33 as he and Brian Pfaff demolished Churchies from Brisbane in Australia to have them all out for just 107. Marc van Wymeersch in scoring 59, took Hilton to a comfortable eight-wicket win.

Despite only making 137, St John’s from Harare in Zimbabwe won by eight runs in an exciting finish against hosts Kearsney. James Lambert was the best of the home-side bowlers with three wickets.

Kearsney, perhaps thinking that a victory was a formality, was reduced to 50-5 and then it was a struggle. K. Geyle had done much of the early damage as he finished with 5-30 and M. Wicks polished off the tail with 3-3.

Michaelhouse, after making one of the better first innings scores of 173 lost by seven wickets against St David’s from Inanda in Johannesburg. Nick Hellens and Dean Stephen were the main contributors with the bat. In an unbeaten partnership of over 60 runs, D. Nash and J. Steere took St David’s to their win.

In a remarkable recovery after being 120-9, Bishops from Cape Town, were eventually bowled out for 222 when the last wicket pair of Digby Harding (80) and last man Saud Abrahams (72*) added 102 for the 10th wicket against the bowling of Peterhouse from Marendera in Zimbabwe. Best of the bowlers was a four-wicket haul by Daniel Moolman. Solid batting by Donovan Flack and Campbell Saul took Peterhouse to 140-2 at the close of play.
