Ludik fit to make Currie Cup debut for Sharks

SHARKS head coach John Plumtree still has injury problems, but he has named a strong and predictable line-up for tomorrow’s tough Currie Cup opener against Griquas in Kimberley.

Plumtree said he expected the Sharks team to grow stronger during the Currie Cup as such players as Bok wing JP Pietersen, Jean Deysel, Willem Alberts, Lionel Mapoe and Bismarck du Plessis return in the weeks ahead.

But he was still able to name 14 players who have seen Super 14 action for what promises to be a tough start to the Currie Cup.

The 35-year-old Stefan Terblanche, who led the Sharks with such success last year, will captain the side from outside centre as SA U21 player Pat Lambie returns at fullback.

Terblanche will partner Riaan Swanepoel in the midfield while Lwazi Mvovo, who made a late impact in the Super 14, is on the wing.

But Plumtree is particularly pleased to have former Lions fullback, Louis Ludik, back from major knee surgery and making his senior debut for the Sharks on the other wing.

“Louis has had a long fight back from injury. He’s been with us since the start of the year and it’s been pretty frustrating for him. He’s had a few setbacks, but he’s worked hard and is tough mentally. I’ve been really impressed with him. He’s trained hard and he deserves the opportunity to show us what he can do.”

Rory Kockott and Steve Meyer are at halfback while Keegan Daniel, Michael Rhodes and Jacques Botes will form an effective loose trio.

Alistair Hargreaves and Steven Sykes, both capped for the Boks, are in the second row, while providing excellent cover for their missing all-Bok front-row are Patric Cilliers, Craig Burden and Wiehahn Herbst.

The match kicks off at 3 pm tomorrow (screened on SS1) and Jaco Peyper is the referee.
