MD charged with racial insults

2012-05-05 00:00

THE managing director of Triple A Beef appeared briefly in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court yesterday on seven charges that included assault, crimen injuria and malicious damage to property.

Shaun Kelly Caine (60) of Oak Park allegedly directed racial slurs at his next-door neighbour’s workers while they were busy with tiling work last month.

He came out and told the workers that there were making a noise.

He allegedly called them “f***ing monkeys” and “baboons” and then allegedly fired at them with a paintball rifle.

Accompanied by a woman companion, Caine paced up and down the corridors outside court and fiddled with his cellphone.

He waited impatiently for his name to be called as he sat on a bench outside “C” court, wearing jeans and a blue shirt.

On taking the stand, he started coughing and took out a throat lozenge to suck.

The magistrate wasn’t pleased.

“Are you chewing something in front of the court?” magistrate Celumusa Zungu asked.

Caine told the court he had a throat infection and spat out the lozenge.

Zungu released Caine on warning and the case was postponed to June 7 for further investigations.

According to the charge sheet, Caine is facing the following charges:

• Assault for threatening to injure and kill Morahla Mokoena.

• Assault for threatening to kill Thabiso Mosebo.

• Assault with intent to do

grievous bodily harm for shooting Thabiso Mosebo with a paintball gun.

• Crimen injuria for calling Thabiso Mosebo a monkey and baboon.

• Crimen injuria for calling Thami Mbili a baboon and ‘f*****g k*****’.

• Crimen injuria for calling Sandile Petros Malinga a ‘k*****’, ‘baboon’ and ‘monkey’.
