THE turnaround strategy at giant Pietermaritzburg door manufacturer TDM is gaining momentum under newly appointed managing director Lorraine Hebblethwaite-Scharf.

A lawyer and university lecturer by profession, she is a member of the TDM founding family.

The business was established almost 50 years ago by brothers Peter and Helmuth Scharf.

TDM, which began operating in Willowton about 27 years ago, remains a family-owned business, said Hebblethwaite-Scharf.

She told The Witness that TDM “tried the corporatisation of the business for a brief period a few years ago, but found that TDM is absolutely a family business that requires a special hands-on family approach”.

The company will now focus on the South African market.

“The first priority we have is to preserve the jobs we have created in Pietermaritzburg, coming off the back of a recession.

“We’re doing better than projected. There will be less emphasis on exports. We’re now a national distributor with the opening of our warehouse in Cape Town.”

The business employs about 500 people in Pietermaritzburg.

Hebblethwaite-Scharf stressed the importance of supporting the Pietermaritzburg business community by procuring goods and services locally wherever possible.

She lectured in law at the University of KwaZulu-Natal Pietermaritzburg campus for 10 years.
