MEC condemns murder of foreign shop owners in Inchanga

2015-02-11 00:00

TWO foreign shop owners were shot dead inside their store in Inchanga on Monday evening.

The men, believed to be Ethiopian nationals, were allegedly attacked by a group of locals who shot them before fleeing with the victims’ bakkie.

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu, yesterday expressed anger and condemned at this latest attack on foreign shop owners, describing it as “pure criminality that should be treated as such”.

He said these attacks were undermining peaceful efforts currently taking place to resolve the matter.

“We are extremely disappointed and angered by these latest murders. They unfortunately come at a time we were convinced we were making progress in amicably resolving these attacks in the Greater Inanda.

“We must continue engaging in talks to resolve whatever differences that might have emerged around the presence of these business people in the areas in question.

“I have also been assured that KwaZulu-Natal police have a security plan to address the escalation of these attacks,” said Mchunu.

He appealed to communities to work with the police to ensure these attacks come to an end.

Police investigations into the two murders are ongoing.
