MEC ends municipal impasse on delivery

2007-11-23 00:00

The mayors of the two municipalities recommitted themselves to the project at a special meeting of their executive committees with the MEC yesterday.

Mabuyakhulu intervened after receiving a directive from President Thabo Mbeki to resolve the issues between the municipalities during the presidential imbizo in August. The people of Ladysmith complained to the president that they were being denied water as a result of political wrangling between the two municipalities.

Mabuyakhulu put an end to the political bickering by allowing the municipalities to recognise matters of common cause affecting the project.

The executive committees identified poor communication as a major barrier that resulted in responsibilities not being fulfilled.

Ten kilometres of the 17-km pipe have been put into the ground since the project began nearly two years ago.

The MEC insisted that the district and local mayors hold a joint meeting with the people of Ladysmith to update them of the intended outcomes and process of the project.

“If the two mayors clearly communicate these issues with the people, I don’t identify any further challenges,” Mabuyakhulu said.

uThukela District Municipality Mayor Sabelo Sithole and eMnambithi Mayor Dudu Mazibuko said they were happy that they finally have a solution and had received clarity on what tasks their municipalities have to fulfil.

Mabuyakhulu also met with the executive committees of all municipalities under the uThukela District Municipality to impress upon them the importance of rising above political differences to effect service delivery.
