MEC runs all-out to qualify for Comrades

2011-03-22 00:00

PROVINCIAL Health MEC Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo has shown that nothing will stop him from fulfilling his dream of competing in the Comrades Marathon after he completed the qualifier Midmar Marathon in four hours 55 minutes on Sunday.

In February Dhlomo was 25 minutes too late for the cut-off when he reached the finish line of the 15th Weekend Witness Maritzburg Marathon, but said he was happy to have completed the popular event.

He said he would work even harder to finish the qualifying races in time to qualify for the Comrades as he had already registered.

The Comrades Marathon will be run at the end of May.

Dhlomo reiterated that his participation in the races will be his contribution towards creating awareness of the dangers of non-communicable diseases and ways of reducing deaths and diseases by improving diet and increasing levels of physical activity.

“Unhealthy diets and physical inactivity are key risk factors for major non-communicable diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, cancer and diabetes,” he said.

He added that physical inactivity is identified as the fourth leading risk factor in premature mortality.

Dhlomo’s participation in this year’s Comrades will be historic as he will be the first sitting member of the legislature to run the race.

He said he hopes his participation will encourage parliamentarians and leaders in other sectors to join him in his campaign.
