MEC’s intervention brings hope to troubled taxi organisation

THERE is finally hope to settle the bloody taxi feud among the affiliates of the Mpumalanga Taxi Association in Hammarsdale after an attempt to broker a truce yesterday.

This is the view of Transport MEC Willies Mchunu, who addressed taxi operators in the area community hall.

Mchunu was called in by unnamed parties who want to bring the industry’s operations back to normal after 12 people were killed between 2005 and 2008.

Bongani Khoza, a member, said the problem started in 2007 when a new chairman of the association, whose name is withheld, was appointed.

“He brought about a divide-and- rule strategy, which led to a number of operators being kicked out of the association, and they were prohibited from operating in the area,” he said.

Mchunu appealed to the operators to work towards peace and then arranged for another meeting to discuss the way forward.
