MES expansion boosts faith in local economy

2010-06-02 00:00

IN a move that signals significant confidence in the local economy during a difficult period for local industries and employees, Mechanical and Engineering Services (MES) has completed a R15 million expansion project, resulting in a new, 650 m² fully equipped workshop.

The company, in Pentrich Road, Pietermaritzburg, employs more than 60 permanent staff members, including about 40 artisans such as pipe fitters, boilermakers, mechanical fitters, riggers and coded welders.

MES, which was established in 2000 by Allen Donnelly, is involved in engineering supply, pre-fabrication and installation of piping, structural steelwork and tanks, pressure vessels and the installation of mechanical equipment for a variety of industries.

The company is also a specialist in the manufacturing of stainless steel tanks.

Donnelly has said he is passionate about the upliftment of staff members and their families — primarily through skills development.

Administration manager Enzo Willis said the workshop is significantly larger than the company’s initial facility and is 15 metres high compared to the standard height of about four metres.

“This project is the first phase of an ambitious, long-term expansion project.”

Willis told The Witness that the investment was prompted by greater demand and the need to diversify the company’s product range.

MES can now manufacture storage tanks with a length of up to 14 metres , servicing the food and beverage industry, petro-chemical sector and the textiles industry.

Maverick Construction in Pietermaritzburg completed the work over about two years.
