M.L. Sultan: funds set aside for building of school

2013-06-07 00:00

THERE is money in the KZN Education Department budget for the relocation of M.L. Sultan School. The Witness reported earlier that the school was to be moved to Manor and would not remain stranded in the parking lot of the shopping centre that is being built behind it.

Msunduzi Municipality’s manager for investment promotion, David Gengan, who has been part of the negotiations for the relocation of the school, said in various urgent meetings to get the relocation process under way, the Education Department had made it clear that the relocation of the school had been on its priority list and that the department had set aside funds for its priority projects. Gengan said that the department had given Public Works the go-ahead to begin negotiations with property developer Andrew Barnes, who owns the site in Manor where the school will be moved to. Firstly, the project would involve a land exchange. An independent valuation would be carried out on both sites and whoever owned the less valuable site would pay the difference.

In terms of the school building, Barnes has committed to replace the school by giving the Education Department the exact square meterage of the existing building on the Manor site. However, if the department wants a bigger school and more facilities, it would have to pay the difference.

Education Department spokesperson Sihle Mlotshwa said he could not give exact amounts of how much will be spent on the project.
