MTB Masters: cyclists mob Burry’s dad

2013-08-24 00:00

CHARLES Stander, the father of the late mountain biking star, Burry, yesterday competed at the UCI Mountain Bike Masters World Championships.

After finishing in the middle of the field, Charles described the race as very tough, but said he was happy he finished in the 60 to 64 cross-country category.

“Burry was shining down on me today,” he said.

Tomorrow, the Stander family will be back at Cascades MTB Park supporting Duane, Burry’s brother, in the 30 to 34 cross- country category.

“He used to be a downhill South African champion, but now he only does cross-country,” Charles said of Duane.

Charles is also a former downhiller, and claimed a silver in the 50 to 55 category in Canada in 2010.

After his race, Charles was mobbed by other cyclists who wanted to take a photograph with him.

Jim Frith from Virginia in the United States told Stander how he met his son and they became friends.

“When Burry was at the world cup in Windham, New York, last year, my friend and I shared a suite with him and another rider. When we met, we didn’t know they were these great riders. We introduced ourselves and ended up becoming friends,” Frith said

The following day, Frith said, Burry dominated the field and claimed his world title.

“The crowd just went wild after he finished. That was an American crowd cheering wildly for a South African. I just wanted to tell that to his father today,” Frith said.
