STELLENBOSCH — After about 200 hours in the saddle, with only about 20 hours of sleep, in temperatures that ranged from 30°C to below freezing, adventure athlete Martin Dreyer won the Freedom Challenge mountain bike race at the Diemersfontein wine estate near Wellington on Friday night.

Dreyer (43), a seven-time Dusi Canoe Marathon champion, left KwaZulu-Natal early in the morning of June 19, in the last group of riders, the first group having left on June 9. The race is cycled over a technically challenging 2 300 km route from Pietermaritzburg to the Boland.

Ten days, 16 hours and 40 minutes later, Dreyer rode over the finish line just before 11 pm on Friday to be declared the winner, according to the SuperSport website.

His time improved on last year’s winning time, set by Alex Harris, by more than a day. Harris finished second this year.

Dreyer got off his bicycle just in time to spend the last hour of his wife Jeanie’s birthday with her.

The route takes in dirt roads, six mountain ranges, Karoo plains, wilderness areas and nature reserves.
