MTN8 win for the supporters, says Khune

JOHANNESBURG — Kaizer Chiefs skipper Itumeleng Khune says his team’s MTN8 triumph is dedicated to their loyal supporters following a trophy-less season in the 2013/14 Premier Soccer League (PSL) campaign.

The Phefeni Glamour Boys earned the bragging rights over their perennial rivals, Orlando Pirates, in the MTN8 final at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday night.

Tefu Mashamaite’s strike was adequate for Amakhosi to claim the R8 million cheque on the night.

The Ventersdorp-born goal-minder missed the mouth-watering clash due to an ankle injury but was delighted to see his team-mates continue their red-hot form that has seen them win their first six PSL games.

Khune (27) said he made a personal promise to the supporters that the Soweto giants would do their best to walk away with every cup on offer this season.

“All people seated up there [fans] deserve this victory,” said Khune.

“They have been with us through thick and thin. Last season we didn’t win anything and we made a promise to them that this season we will make amends.

“I also made a personal promise to them at the beginning of this season that we will do everything we can to sweep every cup competition on offer.

“Now we won the MTN8 for them and I believe that this is the beginning of greater things to come.”

Chiefs are currently on top of the PSL log as they hope to correct last season’s mistakes.

They will switch their focus to the league fixtures as they aim to continue with their fine start when they face Maritzburg United at the FNB Stadium on Saturday.
