MTV’s hunt for the next VJ comes to Durban

2013-07-12 00:00

THE MTV Base VJ Search auditions will take place in Durban this weekend and one person who knows exactly how it feels to win the competition is Nomuzi Mabena.

She beat Naledi Radebe and Nomzamo Mbatha to win the 2012 edition of the competition.

Six days later, Mabena was on air working as an MTV Base VJ and on’s Club 808, alongside Dineo Ranaka and Mo Flava.

Since then Mabena, who lives in Randburg, has been able to engage with the cream of musical talent on the African continent and was the host of the recent MTV Africa All Stars concert, featuring Snoop Lion, in Durban. “The whole continent was in one country … it has never happened before and it was amazing to be a part of. And I got to meet and chill with Snoop Dogg [Lion]. I would have paid to be able to do that,” she said about the show in Durban.

Asked to recall her own experience of being in the competition, Mabena said: “When the auditions came to Johannesburg, I’d already done a bunch of other auditions, so I wasn’t going to go.

“Then, the night before, I hadn’t had any calls, so I thought I’d better go. It was one of the most intense experiences of my life being on the MTV Base VJ Search and I encourage everyone to do it.”

She said she had learned so much in the past year, not only technical skills, but about her own strengths and weaknesses.

“You really learn a lot about yourself and what you can do … I still remember Bonang [Matheba] saying to us: ‘Find out what about yourself you can bottle and sell.’ I haven’t forgotten that.”

Mabena admits to having fallen in love with the continent and its music and enjoys nothing more than spending hours interacting with fans on her Twitter profile to find out what they want to see and hear on radio and television.

The MTV Base VJ Search auditions will take place at the Promozone Court at the Gateway Theatre of Shopping in Umhlanga tomorrow.

Initial callbacks will be at the Durban Country Club on Sunday, July 14 in front of judges Sizwe Dhlomo, Joey Rasdien and Gagasi FM’s Zookey, who will also host a live broadcast on Gagasi FM from the auditions.

The three Durban qualifiers will be announced on Monday, July 15.

“I’ve had so much fun this past year. And I can’t wait for someone else to have the same experience,” Mabeng said about the competition.

This year’s winner will get a presenting job on MTV Base, worth over R500 000, and a DS3 Cabrio, courtesy of Citroën, worth R315 000.

Highlights and funny moments from the auditions will feature on the 2013 MTV Base VJ Search, which premieres on MTV Base (DStv channel 322) on August 16 at 5 pm.
