MXit: KZN teen sells naked pics

2009-02-24 00:00

Durban — The news that a 13-year-old girl sold nude photographs of herself via MXit has prompted the police to launch an awareness campaign in Richard’s Bay about the possible dangers of MXit.

The girl said many of her female friends were doing the same.

Inspector Ryno Louw of the organised crime unit said the high school teenager ran the risk of being found by a paedophile syndicate.

Although she never said where she was from in her MXit messages, the buyer, a man from Johannesburg, immediately knew she was from KZN. That’s only possible if you have contacts in the cellphone industry, Louw believes.

After the man paid her R170 per photograph, he wanted to make arrangements to meet her, Louw said. Her mother found out and contacted the police.

Police have warned parents to ensure that their children are not communicating with strangers on MXit.
