Mabizela to explain arrest to his club

MBULELO Mabizela, aka “OJ”, has a lot of explaining to do to his Mamelodi Sundowns team following his arrest in Pietermaritzburg for drunk driving late last week.

The 25-year-old star defender for the Sundowns was expected to appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court yesterday, but police said his appearance has been postponed to Thursday. He was granted R500 bail on Friday, a few hours after being arrested.

But Mabizela’s bosses are expecting him in Pretoria, where all his team-mates are, as the league season has not yet closed, according to Sundowns spokesman Mahlatse Mphahlele.

Mphahlele said Mabizela will have to justify his wayward behaviour when he returns to the club’s camp in Chloorkop, Pretoria.

“All the players are here and I’m also here because the league has not yet closed. I don’t want to pre-empt what action might be taken against him. But as soon as he decides to return, he will have to explain the police action and his disappearance,î said Mphahlele.

Police spokeswoman Inspector Joey Jeevan confirmed that Mabizela will only appear in court on Thursday.

Mabizela was arrested during an RTI roadblock in Alan Paton Avenue at about 3 pm on Friday. The traffic authorities found that he was four times over legal alcohol limit while driving his Chrysler.

Police also found that his black vehicle had an expired temporary registration plate.
