Machel speaks of her pain over Mandela’s health

2012-12-11 00:00

GRAÇA Machel opened her heart over the health of her husband yesterday.

Former president Nelson Mandela (94) is undergoing tests in a Pretoria hospital.

“It is painful to see him getting old,” she told eNCA news.

“One knows it will happen, but it is sad to see the spark dimming.”

Presidential spokesperson Mac Maharaj said yesterday the battery of tests is continuing, and that he slept well on Sunday night.

He thanked South Africans for countless messages of support, and for respecting the privacy of Mandela and his family.

Sister paper Beeld understands that a large number of the country’s leading physicians, including a well-known cardiologist, are involved in the former president’s care.

The tests will take time and South Africans will be kept informed of key findings, but not given all the details.

The government has appealed for no panic about Mandela’s hospitalisation.

Yesterday, Defence Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula confirmed outside 1 Military Hospital near Pretoria, that Mandela has been there since Saturday.

She said he is “doing very, very well”.

“We must keep him in our prayers, but it is important not to create an atmosphere of panic,” she said.

She declined to give any details of what tests are being done, saying that “at his age, from time to time there are challenges with his health”.

The group of foreign journalists camped outside the hospital grew during the day.
