Madiba: Special birthday R5 coin

2008-07-07 00:00

Former president Nelson Mandela stands in front of a picture of a new R5 coin, during its launch at the Mandela Foundation in Johannesburg yesterday to celebrate Mandela’s 90th birthday.

The coin features a portrait of Mandela, and five million of them will go into circulation on Friday, July 18, Mandela’s birthday.

Finance Minister Trevor Manuel said the coin will share ‘Tata’s’ love, experience and leadership. Mandela, Manuel and Reserve Bank governor Tito Mboweni struck one of the coins using a manual press.

‘Render unto Caesar what belongs to Caesar,’ Mboweni said after handing the new coin to Mandela, who remarked: ‘I’m a bit richer this morning’.

Manuel and Mboweni called on everyone to use the new coin, rather than hoarding it. ‘Do use it to buy goods and services,’ he said.
