Madiba: Stable after gallstones op

2012-12-17 00:00

FORMER president Nelson Mandela is recovering well after an endoscopic procedure to remove gallstones at the weekend.

Presidency spokesperson Mac Maharaj said yesterday his condition is unchanged.

Mandela was operated on on Saturday, after a week of treatment for a lung infection.

Doctors said yesterday the procedure normally caused little discomfort. Anaethesia was always a risk for someone his age, however, especially for someone suffering a lung infection.

They said it seemed Mandela had responded well to the lung treatment, otherwise the gallstone surgery would not have been performed.

Maharaj emphasised that gallstones were removed, not the whole gall bladder.

There was no word on when Mandela might go home.
