Madiba’s birthday: Special celebratory stamps available from today

2008-07-14 00:00

TODAY, the SA Post Office is releasing a limited edition of stamps to commemorate former president Nelson Mandela’s 90th birthday.

The Madiba stamps will be sold in all post offices countrywide. Local outlets have already sold the limited number they were issued and ordered far more.

The single sheet stamps, which show large pictures of Mandela, with the area around his face able to be torn out to be used on an ordinary letter, are available for both domestic and international postage. First day covers with both stamps, a folder with the stamps and a brief biography are also available.

Dumisani Nxumalo, manager of the main Pietermaritzburg post office, said he expects the stamps to appeal to collectors and non-collectors alike, because of Mandela’s popularity.

Peter Southwood, president of the local Philatelic (stamp collecting) Society, said he found this release both “interesting and exciting from a stamp club point of view”, adding that because of the limited number, they could be valuable in the future.

News of the stamps was met with excitement yesterday.

Stamp collector Dorothy Evans said she will buy at least two sets because Madiba is a great man.

Buhle Makhathini of Northdale said he will also buy the stamps, even though he isn’t a collector.

Alex Bekker, a former Robben Island warden, said “a stamp is just a stamp” and while he would buy the stamps to use, he has his own pictures with Mandela to remember him by.
