Madiba’s condition ‘serious’

2012-12-21 00:00

PRESIDENT Jacob Zuma has told ANC delegates that Nelson Mandela’s health condition was “serious”.

However, the former president was responding well to treatment and his condition had improved steadily in the last few days, he said in his closing remarks at the conference.

Mandela has been in hospital for 13 days with a lung infection and has undergone surgery to remove gallstones.

“I have been informed that at his age doctors need to intervene in gradual and sensitive ways to maximise his chances of a full recovery. The medical team has our full confidence and he is receiving the best care possible,” Zuma said.

Madiba was an “unparalleled fighter and always been so”. — WR.
