Mahatma Gandhi: MEC hails turnaround

2011-04-19 00:00

MAHATMA Gandhi Memorial hospital, north of Durban, has improved on service delivery, especially in cleanliness and infection control, said Health MEC Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo at the hospital yesterday.

Dhlomo commended the staff for reducing waiting times. Patients had been forced to wait the whole day for medicines, but the average has been reduced to 25 minutes.

“Hospitals around Durban are referring their infection control nurses to Mahatma Gandhi to benchmark. These improvements are commendable given the size of the hospital and the population they serve.

“I am glad to announce that we are now moving very fast to building Dr Pixley kaSeme Hospital, which we believe will relieve some of the patient load from this hospital,” the MEC said.

Mahatma Gandhi is delivering between 600 and 800 babies per month in the eThekwini district. In 2005 it was reported that contaminated equipment and poor infection control measures led to an outbreak of klebsiella pneumonia that killed 21 babies at the hospital.

The improvements mean that there will not be another outbreak killing babies as it happened in 2005, said Dhlomo.

Community leader pastor Marvin Maistry said of the improvements at the hospital: “I challenge anyone who continues to complain about the hospital in the media to come and see for themselves.

“I brought a badly stabbed man last week and we were attended to within an hour.”
