Majalila to feature in clash with Sundowns

IN tonight’s only PSL match, Maritzburg United will entertain Mamelodi Sundowns at the Nelson Mandela Bay stadium in Port Elizabeth.

The clash is one of United’s three home matches that they have moved to PE this season.

Usually when these sides meet at this stage of the season, it is a top versus bottom clash, with United the side nearest the foot of the table.

But an impermeable defensive structure under coach Ernst Middendorp this season has seen his side ship just 14 goals and take their place in the top five on the log, six points ahead of Sundowns in 11th.

Middendorp’s emphasis on defensive structure has not made for the prettiest football at times, but it is hard to criticise a side who are on the verge of recording their best season in the PSL.

But as good as things are for United, their home record this season has seen them win just twice in nine matches. Sundowns, meanwhile, have won just one of their nine fixtures on the road.

When the sides met at the same venue last season, a Cuthbert Malajila goal sealed all three points for the Team of Choice, and the Zimbabwean striker is expected to play some part in today’s clash — good news for United fans who missed a performance with any attacking threat against AmaZulu on Tuesday night.

United have already beaten Sundowns this season — a brace from midfielder Delron Buckley resulting in a 2-1 win back in September.

The match kicks off at 8 pm and will be televised on SuperSport Four.
