Major events confirm PMB as Africa’s cycling mecca

Pietermaritzburg has underlined its position as the cycling capital of Africa with the official announcement of three international events taking place in 2009.

“These events are huge,” said Alec Lenferna, managing director of Treble Entertainment.

Explaining why Pietermaritzburg has been selected, Lenferna said: “When we were awarded the cycling contract, we looked for a city that was big enough to handle the events but small enough to need them. Maritzburg had the right vibe … and the city was very supportive.”

The first event will be the UCI 1.1 Men’s Elite Pro Tour road race, the World’s View Challenge. Five UCI Pro Tour teams have already confirmed their participation, with teams from Italy and Germany returning from success at this year’s Intaka Tech World’s View Challenge.

The road cycling event is from February 13-15. An expected six Pro Tour teams who have competed in the renowned Tour de France will take part. This event has been elevated to the UCI World Tour calendar, so more international teams will be likely to show up.

What promises to be a huge crowd-pleaser is the Mountain Biking World Cup.

A permanent track is being prepared at Cascades Shopping Mall, with all three disciplines having a home in the awesome surroundings.

The Mountain Biking World Cup will take place from April 4-12, with an expected 90 teams taking part.

The last event is the BMX, at The Royal Show Grounds.

The BMX Supercross World Cup Series and the BMX World Champs will take place in August next year.
