Major new mall for KZN

2012-03-30 00:00

A MAJOR regional shopping centre for northern Kwazulu-Natal, Newcastle Mall, opened its doors yesterday to a positive reception from locals.

The centre, which has a captive audience estimated at almost half a million people, is thought to be valued at more than R500 million.

It has 94 stores, including national tenants like Mr Price, Woolworths, Incredible Connection, Foschini, Identity, American Swiss, NWJ, Mugg & Bean, Debonairs, Milky Lane and Rage Shoes.

At any one time about 750 people are employed at the mall

The developers, Zenprop Property Holdings (Pty) Ltd, secured the rights to develop the shopping centre about five years ago.

Zenprop said it has developed malls in Sandton, Soweto, Cape Town and Pretoria.

Construction of Newcastle Mall began in January 2011.

The mall covers about 35 000 square metres on 21 hectares. It is next to the Black Rock Casino and Hotel.

Local tenants are also represented at the mall, which ranks among the largest in the province.

Ample parking is available for the large customer base, which extends beyond Newcastle’s immediate boundaries.

Apart from the job opportunities created by construction firms and retailers, the mall also serves to diversify the composition of the local economy.

Newcastle, in the Amajuba district, has a well-established agricultural and industrial sector, with industries like ArcelorMittal Steel and Karbochem.

Shoppers no longer have to put up with the Newcastle CBD’s congested trading environment or long trips to Pietermaritzburg and Durban.

It is also likely that the centre will serve as a regional centre for residents of nearby towns.

The centre is the second major retail centre to open in KZN in the space of six months, following the opening of the R450 million Greater Edendale Mall in Pietermaritzburg last year.
