Malema insolvency coming soon

2013-08-14 00:00

JULIUS Malema, leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters, could be sequestrated before the end of next month.

SA Revenue Service spokesperson Adrian Lackay said the taxman’s application to sequestrate Malema will be heard unopposed in September.

SARS had submitted the application at the end of January to the high court in Pretoria after several failed attempts to collect R16 million from Malema.

Malema allegedly never reacted to the application, which means it will be heard unopposed.

Most of Malema’s assets and properties have been auctioned, which brings his debt closer to R9 million.

Lackay said a curator is currently in control of sales and must still determine exactly how much Malema still owes the taxman.

Tumi Mokwena, Malema’s legal representative, said he has not yet received any notification that the application would be heard next month.

Malema, who has a chance to win a seat in Parliament with the youth vote in Limpopo, would not be able to become a member for seven years if he is sequestrated.

The Constitution states that unrehabilitated insolvents may not be elected to Parliament and thus also not as president.
