Malema’s no-show upsets youth

2010-11-29 00:00

THE ANC Youth League continued with its call for “generational mix” in the ANC leadership and within local communities during a rally at the Durban University of Technology in Pietermaritzburg yesterday.

Youth league President Julius Malema and the newly appointed Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula did not attend, despite being billed to be there.

Hundreds of students and delegates were addressed by ANCYL spokesperson Floyd Shivambu, ANCYL provincial chairperson Mthandeni Dlungwane and KZN Health MEC Sibongiseni Dhlomo.

The failure of the two leaders to arrive disappointed the crowd, who were told off by Dhlomo for their lack of energy.

Dlungwane said the ANCYL leadership in the province want lobbying for ANC positions to be officially opened so they can push for younger people to the elected into the ANC’s senior structures.

“As we go to the next year’s local government elections, we want to win all the wards. We also want to see younger people being elected as councillors and mayors, as the time to be led by older people is coming to an end.”

He added that ANCYL is anxiously awaiting open lobbying for the 2012 conference as it wants the youth to be elected to senior leadership in the party. It is also hoping to see Mbalula elected to a top six position in the party.

Dlungwane’s calls were echoed by Shivambu.
