Mall: a PMB success story

2011-09-26 00:00

THE eagerly awaited R450 million Edendale Mall will open its doors on Thursday, unlocking the economic potential of the bulk of Pietermaritzburg’s residents.

The regional shopping centre covers 31 520 square metres and boasts more than 100 tenants, including national retailers Shoprite , Pick n Pay, Truworths, Edgars Active, Markhams, Jet, Legit, Chicken Licken, Hungry Lion, Spur, McDonalds and Steers.

The mall, which was developed by McCormick Property Development and run by two dynamic women, is located on the corner of Edendale Road and Dambuza/Mount Partridge Road.

Edendale Mall centre manager Tasmia Dayaram said he believes the mall will emerge as one of Pietermaritzburg’s major success stories.

She told The Witness that there is a phenomenal level of anticipation from the community in the build-up to the opening.

She said, “It’s massive and it’s new to this community and they were not expecting the calibre of stores on site, with the mall boasting top national retail brands.

“They can’t believe the size and the amount of stores in the mall. There’s also a lot of excitement about the restaurants … you don’t have to go all the way to town for fast food,” she said.

Edendale Mall public liaison officer Thobeka Zimu said she is looking forward to the upliftment opportunities brought about as a result of the mall.

Dayaram said residents will be surprised by the refurbished wetland and the array of popular restaurants.

She said the management has put measures in place to ensure that the mall is run as a highly efficient, quality retail hub.

“We have a top-notch security system and 24-hour security guards to ensure the safety of our shoppers and to prevent crime.”
