A QUARREL among three friends inside a Raisethorpe Shoprite store on Saturday ended with one man being shot dead and another injured, allegedly by a security guard.

The security guard was arrested and charged.

The other man involved in the argument fled.

According to SA Police Force spokesperson Warrant Officer Joey Jeevan, just before 7 pm three men started arguing in the shop.

“The cashier decided to call a security guard after several failed attempts to stop the men from arguing inside the store.”

Jeevan said they were asked by the security guard to leave the store and when they got outside they began to assault the security guard.

The guard then pulled out a firearm and fired a warning shot, said Jeevan.

“The men did not retreat, and the security guard shot at the men, fatally wounding Thamsanqa Mchunu, who was declared dead on the scene,” she said.

A second victim, Dumisani Memela, was found on Chota Motala Road near the shop with a gunshot wound.

He was treated on the scene and taken to Northdale Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

“After further investigations it was discovered that the security guard used an unlicensed firearm and he was arrested.”

The security guard was charged with being in possession of an unlicensed firearm, murder and attempted murder.

He will appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrates’ Court otomorrow, said Jeevan.

She said investigations are still continuing.
