Mama Sisulu: thousands pay their respects

2011-06-13 00:00

Mourners display the order of service as they gather for the funeral of Albertina Sisulu in Soweto on Saturday. South Africans are mourning a woman celebrated for her role in the fight against apartheid and for her nurturing of a new generation of leaders. Crowds singing hymns and songs from the anti-apartheid era began gathering hours before Mama Sisulu’s funeral at the 40 000 seat Orlando Stadium in Soweto. The service followed a week of national mourning during which flags were flown at half-mast across South Africa and at its foreign missions. Sisulu collapsed and died at her Johannesburg home on June 2 at the age of 92.
