Mambazo founder at murder trial

LADYSMITH Black Mambazo founder Joseph Shabalala put in an appearance in the public gallery at the Pietermaritzburg High Court yesterday where the alleged killer of his brother, Sipho Ben Shabalala, was on trial.

The trial of Themba Patrick Gumede (41) was adjourned for judgment to July 1 in the Durban High Court.

The case was only in Pietermaritzburg for legal arguments to be presented before high court Judge Jerome Mnguni.

Gumede is charged with the murder of Sipho Shabalala and attempted murder of Ayanda and Sanele Shabalala on June 17, 2004 at Newlands East.

It is alleged in the State’s indictment that the accused was in love with Sipho Shabalala’s wife and decided to have him killed. To achieve this, he allegedly hired killers to murder him.

On the morning of June 17, 2004, the assassins allegedly lay in wait for Shabalala near Roseland Primary School where two of his children went to school.

When Shabalala stopped his vehicle near the school — and while he and his children were still in the vehicle — the attackers allegedly opened fire, killing him.
