A GROUP of residents used a variety of weapons to kill a 21-year-old man in what is believed to be an act of mob justice in a Pietermaritzburg informal settlement on  Sunday night.

Police said Woodlands community members watched in shock as Siboniso Dlamini ran for his life at about 10.30 pm. He was being chased by an armed mob.

They eventually caught up with him and assaulted him with sticks, knives and pangas until he died.

Police arrested two men, aged 33 and 47.

It is alleged that the commotion broke out at Site 11 informal settlement, where the victim and his attackers are believed to be from.

Said police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joey Jeevan, “The deceased and his friend were allegedly involved in an assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm at about 1 pm on the same day.

“At this stage police believe that the motive for the incident was a revenge attack,”

She said tht when police arrived at the scene they found Dlamini lying motionless in a pool of blood. He had stab wounds to the chest and back and a gash on his head.

“Initial investigations have established that the deceased was attacked by a group of people from the area.”

Jeevan said the two suspects will appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court in connection with the matter.
