Man caught in harvester

2013-08-21 00:00

A 23-YEAR-OLD was seriously injured when he was caught in harvesting machinery while working on a farm at St Bernard’s Peak near the KZN-Lesotho border.

Vanessa Jackson of ER24 said the man suffered extensive injuries to his left leg. A team from Kokstad was called to the scene where the man had his left leg trapped in the chains and spikes of the harvester, right up to the knee.

He was in severe pain and the leg was broken and mangled. They called in the assistance of the ER24 team on the medical rescue helicopter and stabilised the man while awaiting their arrival.

“On arrival, the advanced life support paramedic provided the patient with medication to relieve his pain, and assessed the how to remove the man’s leg from the machine. The only option was to reverse the mechanism and manually remove the leg.”

Jackson said with the patient’s pain under control, they managed to remove him from the machine, stabilised the leg and airlifted him to Mediclinic Pietermaritzburg. “The damage to the leg was extensive and it is not known whether the man’s foot can be saved,” said Jackson.
