Man caught selling girls

2008-06-06 00:00

DURBAN police have arrested a man who runs a sex syndicate selling girls as young as eight to rich businessmen.

The Durban Organised Crime Unit swooped on the the flat of a Sierra Leonean man in the Point area and caught him with three girls (aged between eight and 12) who he was about to pimp out.

Police spokesman Superintendent Muzi Mngomezulu said: “We have been investigating for a month now after a tip-off. The man was well known in the Point area and is believed to have supplied many girls to rich men.”

The girls live in central Durban; one is from Port Elizabeth and lives in a local street shelter.

It is believed that the suspect would source young girls for rich businessmen who wanted specific sexual favours. The suspect would target girls from poor families and promise them that they could make “easy money”.

“The men would call the suspect and place an order for a girl. The man would then find a girl and would make an arrangement with the girl’s mother for payment,” he said.

The suspect would then hire a metered taxi to drop the girl at a certain location. She would spend the night with the client before being returned to her mother.

It is believed that the suspect would charge the men R1 000 a night, R300 of which would go to the girl.

“We are still trying to investigate how the mothers worked with the suspect. We have identified three girls who are involved. It is possible that there are more,” he said.

He said police are also tracing cellphone calls to find the clients.

Mngomezulu said the suspect was out on parole on a drug trafficking charge.

“He was serving an eight-year sentence, but was given early parole. He was also illegally in the country,” he said.
