Man critical after losing arm at work

2015-01-14 00:00

A MAN’S arm was severed after it was caught in a conveyer belt at his place of work in Cato Ridge yesterday afternoon.

The man (32) was working in a factory that produces fertilisers and composts when the incident occurred.

ER24 paramedics arrived at the scene and found the man lying outside the factory, as he had been moved from the conveyer belt by fellow workers.

One medic, who did not want to be named, said the man began to lose consciousness from the huge amount of blood loss.

“It took 30 minutes to stabilise him as he was in a critical condition from the amount of blood he had lost.

“He was given medication for the pain and to sedate him as he became combative in his fight to remain conscious,” said the paramedic.

ER24 spokesperson Pieter Rossouw said the man had sustained severe damage to his shoulder and was transported to hospital immediately.

“He is in a critical but stable condition,” he said.

The incident is being investigated.
