Man dies after fight in tavern

2011-05-18 00:00

A 25-YEAR-OLD man was killed after a fight broke out between two groups at Usuthu tavern in Bhomela location, Paddock, on Saturday.

Margate police spokesperson Sergeant Pumzile Makaula said the fight left six people injured, while Amon Mkhize was killed.

Four of the injured patrons received treatment and were discharged from a local clinic the same day.

Makaula said a group of patrons left Babs Tavern at closing time and went to Usuthu tavern. There they became involved in an argument with another group.

“It is not clear what started the fight and the information from the witnesses does not explain why the groups were fighting … We have received reports of fighting in the taverns, but those had never gone to an extent of murder,”said Makaula.

A 22-year-old man who was critically injured and taken to Murchison Hospital in Port Shepstone was discharged on Monday and charged with the murder of Mkhize.

He will appear at Ezinqoleni Magistrate’s Court today.
