Man dies as speeding car hits Boom St wall

2013-06-10 00:00

A MAN was killed and four people, including two children, were seriously injured when a car crashed into the wall of a property in Boom Street on Saturday night.

The driver, who was allegedly speeding, was declared dead when paramedics arrived.

Tow truck driver Denver Chetty, who was parked near the scene, witnessed the crash.

“The guy was speeding. He was going at around 100 km/h to 120 km/h. He couldn’t even stop at the red robot he was going so fast. When he came into the street he hit a bump. The car went airborne and sparks were flying from under the car. He lost control of the vehicle and swerved. Then he crashed into the wall,” Chetty told The Witness.

Selva Naidoo and his family were sleeping in their home when the car crashed. “I was fast asleep. A loud bang woke me up, and I came out to find this. The wall and gate are badly damaged.”

The property that was damaged is part of Poobie Naidoo’s Sports shop. An employee who did not want to be named arrived at the scene of the crash.

“I got a call from my friend who saw what happened. The driver must have been drunk. If you look in the car you can see bottles of alcohol,” he said.

In another accident, five people were killed when a taxi crashed on a deserted stretch of the R603 in Mdunezulu in the early hours of yesterday or late on Saturday night.

Road Traffic Inspecorate spokesperson Zinhle Mngomezulu told The Witness that the dead were all males between the ages of 12 and 42. The Toyota Quantum hit a tree and overturned. It was found at 4.10 am.
